The composition department at the Royal Conservatoire is a dynamic force both within the Netherlands and internationally: the potential for shakeup and innovation is ever present, and as our history and catalogue of distinguished former students shows, there is much to live up to, and on which to build.
The course is based around creative development, both in terms of the multi-faceted and demanding nature of the current music world, and in the strengthening of individual identity and talent. Along with the practical side of sketching, developing and completion of musical ideas, the training side involves (among other things) instruction in instrumentation and orchestration for various large and small ensembles, and the preparation of professional performance material. All composition students are expected to take part in a 'Studium Generale' in which teachers, guest lecturers and fellow students deal with relevant issues and subjects. Emphasis on the 'craft' of composition in both acoustic and electronic disciplines is essential, but is not designed to repress experimentation and individuality - quite the reverse is true, with the application of practical but adaptive solutions providing the most effective and professional results. |
